A.       Industrial Experience/Industrial Training – A Degree Requirement http://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

A.1. Industrial Training vs Industrial Experience

For all BEng programs, Industrial Experience or Industrial Training is a degree requirement.  All students in these programs must complete and pass the Industrial Experience course or Industrial Training course in order to graduate.

Details of the corresponding UG Program degree requirements can be found at Program and Course Catalog.

A.1.1.   For Students in the following Departments

·   Civil and Environmental Engineering (CIVL)

·   Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE)

Students should complete the prescribed industrial training program by attending all the industrial training modules, submit and pass the Practical Training Report required of each module, and submit and pass the overall Logbook.  For details of exemption, please refer to Section E Exemption from Industrial Training.

A.1.2.   For Students in the following Departments / Program

·   Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)

·   Computer Engineering (CPEG)

·   Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE)

Students should fulfill the requirements of the Industrial Experience course by completing an approved internship of no less than 6 weeks long.  Details of the internship have to be submitted on-line for the major Department’s approval.  Students who fail to complete an approved internship can fulfill the requirement by completing the prescribed industrial training program for that degree program.

A.1.3.   For Students in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics (IEDA)

Students can fulfill the degree requirement by either completing the prescribed industrial training program or completing an approved internship. Two (2) different courses are available for the 2 pathways respectively – IEDA1990 Industrial Training and IEDA1991 Industrial Experience.  Students must seek approval from the IEDA Department before determining their pathway, and seek their help with registering for the appropriate course.

A.1.4.   For Students in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE)

Students are required to complete an approved internship or the required number of plant visits with satisfaction of all related requirements.  For details, please consult the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

A.1.5.   For Students with more than one major

If students enroll into more than one BEng program, they must complete the industrial training or industrial experience requirement of the additional major program.  If a training module is a requirement for both major programs at the same time, double-counting is allowed.

A.1.6.   Contents of Industrial Training Programs

Click here for the contents of industrial training modules for each degree programs.

A.2. Course Registration

A.2.1.   For all Industrial Training Courses (except CIVL2020)

(does not apply to Industrial Experience course)

Eligible students are pre-registered for the relevant Industrial Training Course in the last term of their normative duration of study (which refers to the 8th Semester for students without transferred credits or the 10th Semester for dual degree program studnets without transferred credits). A final grade "P" will be awarded to the students if they complete ALL training requirements by the end of that semester.  On the contrary, students will be graded "F" if they fail to complete ALL training requirements by the end of that semester.  This "F" grade will be permanently recorded on their official transcript.  Those who do not plan to complete all training requirements by the end of that semester can choose to drop the industrial training course during the normal Course Registration Period or the Add/Drop Period.  Dropping the course would require approval from the major Department and the Industrial Training Center since industrial training is a degree requirement.  However, by doing so, the students concerned will not be eligible for graduation by the end of that term.  It is the responsibility of the students concerned to approach Industrial Training Center to complete the registration when they are ready to complete the all training requirements.

Students who plan to graduate earlier than the normative period of study must register for the industrial training course during the Course Registration period of their anticipated graduating term.   Registration can only be done via ITC.  Therefore, they should visit the ITC Office in person during office hours for arrangement.

A.2.2.   For CIVL2020

Students in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will be pre-registered for CIVL2020 (Industrial Training) in their Year 2 Spring Term.  Students who pass CIVL2020 will be pre-registered by the Department for CIVL3020 (Civil Engineering Internship) in third year Summer Term (for CIVL & CIEV students), and fourth year Summer Term (for CIGBM students). For CIVL 3020, there is NO add/drop arrangement.

Please click CIVL3020 for the course details.

A.3. Taking Industrial Training Course Beyond the Normative Duration of Study

Students who do not complete the industrial training during the last term of their normative period of study (please refer to A.2.1. above) may register for the industrial training course in the following term PROVIDED THAT they have successfully obtained the approval from the School of Engineering to extend their length of study. These students should register for the industrial training course by themselves during the normal Course Registration Period of the following term. NO pre-registration will be arranged by the Industrial Training Center.  Please allow at least 2 working days for approval by ITC or your major Department which is required for all required courses. Saturday, Sunday and Public holiday is NOT a working day.

B.3. Training Timetable and Grouping Lists http://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

B.3.1.   Training Timetable

Industrial training is conducted during the Winter and Summer Terms. Exact date/time of training for the Winter Term is usually released in the preceding November, while that for the Summer Term is usually available in the preceding April. The timetables for the upcoming summer will be ready in mid-May.

B.3.2.   Grouping Lists

The student grouping lists are posted together with the training timetables on the ITC homepage. The same grouping lists apply to all training modules conducted at HKPUIC and HKUST.

B.4. Attendance and Make-Up Requirements http://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

Students are required to attend all scheduled training sessions.  The level of attendance should be 100%. Punctuality in attending training is vital. On arrival at the training venues, students are normally asked to "sign in" on a timekeeping record sheet to certify their attendance. When students apply for leave from training sessions with legitimate reason, they should bear in mind that most modules are offered only once a year, either in the Winter or Summer Term. It is the students' responsibility to check the availability of training modules and to arrange for any necessary make-up.

It is students’ obligation to inform Industrial Training Center, in advance, if they cannot attend their scheduled training.

B.4.1.   Application for Leave / Make-up

If students need to take leave from their scheduled in-house training, they must seek prior approval from the HKUST ITC Office. They need to give as much advance notice as possible. Students should complete the form UST-IT01 and submit it to ITC Office in person together with necessary supporting documents during its opening hours for approval.

·         Students who are late for 30 minutes (or more) or less than 30 minutes more than once will be stopped from the training, and are required to make up for the whole module.

·         Unauthorized absence will not be tolerated.  Students have to stop attending training of that module and make up at other session

·        Students who have a legitimate reason for taking leave from training for more than an hour, (e.g. when training clashes with the starting time of their course registration window) will have to seek PRIOR approval from ITC. When leave from training is taken on grounds of emergency (e.g. illness), retroactive approval must be sought from ITC with certificates issued by registered doctors. In both cases of prior and retroactive approval, students have to stop attending the training of that module and are required to make up from where they start missing.

In any case, students are strongly advised to arrange make-up for outstanding in-house training from ITC as early as possible as training places are limited.

C.    Assessment of Industrial Training

C.1. Practical Training Report and Training Logbook http://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

Students are required to submit a Practical Training Report (also referred to as “Logsheet”) for each module and a Training Logbook for the overall training.  For some modules, students are also required to complete Workbooks in addition to the Practical Training Reports and Training Logbook.

The Training Logbook is to be presented as a record reporting on the whole training program, and a Practical Training Report should be a brief technical description of the jobs/tasks that the student has undertaken in a training module.

C.2. Practical Training Report

C.2.1.   Submission

Students are required to submit a Practical Training Report in soft copy/ hard copy within one week after completing each training module.

For hard copy, students should submit to the collection boxes designated for their group at the 6/F lobby of lift 27/28. The departments, year of intakes, and industrial training group numbers are clearly indicated on the trays.

For soft copy, students should send their soft copy directly to the course instructor.

C.2.2.   Contents of the Practical Training Report

The content should be concise.  Please use no more than the space available in the blank form (four A4 sized pages). Use one set of blank forms for each Practical Training Report.

C.3.  Training Logbook

C.3.1.   Logbook Submissionhttp://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

All students, except those in the Civil Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering, are required to submit their Training Logbook within ten weeks from the beginning of the semester which follows the Winter or Summer Term in which the students have completed majority of their training modules.

C.3.3.   Contents of the Training Logbookhttp://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

The Training Logbook should include all marked Practical Training Reports and Workbooks of the modules that the students have completed. In addition to the marked Practical Training Reports and Workbooks, students are required to include in the training logbook a Front Page, Table of Contents, Introduction of the Training Program, Description/Discussion on the Training Modules, and Comments and Conclusions.

Logbooks can be submitted individually to the HKUST Industrial Training Center. You can submit your Logbook individually to the collection boxes. There are larger trays on the top for collecting Logbooks.

There are specific deadlines for submission of logbooks for each degree program, usually within 10 weeks from the beginning of the semester that follows the Winter or Summer Term in which students have completed majority of their training modules. All Logbooks should be submitted to the HKUST ITC Office by the deadlines specified in Section C.3.2. Late submission of the Logbook will affect your grades.

Upon the Logbook submission deadline, if you still have not yet taken or not yet made-up certain modules, or you have not yet submitted or re-submitted certain Training Reports; or the marked report has not yet been returned to you, you still need to submit your Logbook first and indicate the status of the report in the ‘Remark’ column of the Appendix 1 and Appendix 2 tables in the Table of Contents.

C.4.  Forms

C.4.1.   Practical Training Report Forms

The Practical Training Report forms for the respective training workshops and Logbook materials are personalized and have to be downloaded and printed by the students.

[Downloadable forms for Training Logbook and Practical Training Report]

C.5.  Assessment of Modules http://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

C.5.1.   Practical Training Reports, Training Logbook and Workbooks

The respective instructors will be responsible for giving assessment to the respective Workbooks or Practical Training Reports, while Training Logbooks will be assessed by the HKPUIC or HKUST ITC depending on the overall program.

Grading of Workbooks and Practical Training Reports for in-house modules conducted at HKUST will follow the grading policy of the HKUST for undergraduate courses.  Only “Pass” or “Fail” will be given as the final grade.

For policies on assessment at HKPUIC, please refer to the Student Corner at the HKPUIC website for details.

Students who fail in the Workbook will have to make up for the whole module and re-submit the Workbook. Students who score a failure on any Practical Training Report are required to resubmit a fresh report and to continue to do so until they score a pass.

Students must retain all their Practical Training Reports and Workbooks, including any failed ones, as they will later form the main body of their Training Logbook.

C.5.2.   Safety Training

The Engineering Students Safety Training (ESST) modules are now online. The safety modules will be rolled out in different time frames. Students will be informed about the confirmed trianing schedule when the training modules are available. Each safety training module would only be offered once a year. Combination of required modules is assigned by ITC and may differ according to different majors.

Students are expected to study through the provided content and to complete the multiple choices quiz. Students are offered 3 attempts for completing the quiz and the passing mark is 80%, which only the highest mark will be recorded among the attempts. Those failing a module (failing all 3 attempts) will have to retake in the next offering. Students need to compute the percentage of passing mark manually since Canvas does not offer percentage score in quiz interface.

C.5.3.   Other form of Assessment

Some modules may also require individual and/or group projects, which will be announced by the instructor during the training.

C.5.4.   To pass the Industrial Training Course

Students' attention is drawn to the fact that they will not be allowed to graduate from their degree program if they do not complete and pass the Industrial Training course. Students must complete and pass ALL the assessment elements of ALL the training modules prescribed for their degree programs.  The same rule applies to students who use industrial training to fulfill requirements of the Industrial Experience course.

** Failure in the Training Logbook assessment will result in failure in the overall Industrial Training program and thus failure in the Industrial Training Course. The student will be required to resubmit a reworked Training Logbook. **

D.    Training Safety and Insurance http://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

D.1. HKPUIC

Safety shoes (with non-slip soles and steel toe caps) must be worn in all workshops. But for the Industrial Project Unit and Electronics Workshop, strong leather shoes are acceptable, but not sport shoes. Students have to acquire the safety shoes at their own expense. Information of personal protective gear suppliers is available at http://www.safetydirectory.hk/comp_list.htm.

Protective gear – including aprons, face shields, hard hats, goggles or gloves, etc. – will be provided in the HKPUIC workshops where related hazards exist. Students are required to put them on as instructed.

D.2. HKUST

No protective gear is usually required of modules taking place on HKUST campus.

D.3. Insurance

The University has a Group Personal Accident Insurance policy covering registered students participating in academic or extra-curricular activities on-campus or off-campus, local or abroad, subject to certain conditions.

For details of the insurance, please visit https://sfao.ust.hk/individual.php?l=62.

E.     Exemption from Industrial Training http://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

Students who are required by their degree programs to complete industrial training can apply for exemption if they have completed equivalent training elsewhere, or they have completed internships approved by their major Departments.  Students should apply directly to their major Department for exemption from industrial training by using the ITC Exemption Application Form.

Application for exemption will be considered by the major Department on a case basis.  For exemption based on internship, factors like duration of the internship, relevance to the degree program, company or organization that the students have worked with, etc. will all be considered.  Students are also required to submit a brief report and supervisor feedback form upon completion of their internship for the Department’s consideration.

F.     Training Certificates and Green Cards http://egitc.ust.hk/ITC/images/topButton.gif

F.1. Training Certificates

An HKUST industrial training certificate collection notification letter will be sent to students by the ITC Office in mid-October after their graduation. Owing to limited storage space, certificates that are left uncollected after the deadline (which is normally 3 months from the commencement date of the collection period) will be disposed of. Requests for re-issuing the certificates after they have been disposed of are normally not entertained.

Note: Application for the HKPUIC industrial training certificate or testimonial is subject to charge. For more details, please visit the General Office in the HKPUIC.

F.2. Green Cards

The HKSAR Government requires anyone who works on a construction site to complete relevant approved safety training prior to starting work at the site. As a proof of the completion of training, a Green Card approved by the Labour Department has to be carried whenever a person works at a construction site. Students in the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering will be issued Green Cards after they have completed the respective safety training at HKUST. These Green Cards are approved by the Labour Department of the HKSAR Government and will be valid for 3 years from the date of the completion of the relevant safety training. Students will be notified in due course to collect it from the ITC office.

** CIVL/CIEV/CIGBM/CEGBM students need this Green Card for working on CIVL3020 Internship in their Year 3 Summer.  Therefore, it is important for them to complete all Safety Training in their 2nd year of study in the School (or 1st year of study in the Program).**
